Volunteer Bunker Gear & Equipment Costs Among the long list of things most of us take for granted is the incredible amount of money it takes to outfit a volunteer firefighter. Sure, many don’t need our services every day, but just ask someone who has experienced a fire at their home or office, if it does ever happen to you, you want the best trained and equipped firefighters. The IRVFA we fortunate enough to received a $65,000 FEMA grant to purchase and train the Volunteers. Before the grant, Volunteers had to make do with "hand-me-downs" from other Volunteers or from PSFRD. This equipment, whilst meeting minimum NFPA standards, never really fitted properly. Many Volunteers would purchased their own bunker gear, which is far from cheap. The FEMA grant allowed us to purchase new bunker gear for all the Volunteers, with the remaining gear placed in storage for training purposes or for Probationary Volunteer Firefighters, who have limited exposure to fires, but still need protective clothing to work outside the fire scene.
